National Center
for Civil and Human Rights
ATLANTA, GA

-

The center, located in the heart of downtown Atlanta, is situated on 2.5 acres of donated land and provides a “living” center where visitors experience content through interactive exhibits, immersive activities, and hi-tech offerings. The content focuses on the civil rights movement in the United States and human rights issues from a global perspective. The curved facades represent interlocking arms that cradle the central space, symbolizing unity and harmony. Inside, the three levels include exhibits and galleries, an event space, a broadcast studio, and a retail store. The central open space was inspired by public areas in cities around the world in which protests for civil and human rights have taken place. Designed for LEED Gold certification, the building incorporates a high-performance exterior wall assembly, state-of-the-art environmental control systems, a vegetated roof, and other energy-saving features.

EXTENSIVE CONSTRUCTABILITY REVIEWS ENSURING AN ICONIC DESIGN

The National Center for Civil and Human Rights set out to create an iconic, living center where communities can come together to reflect, share, and advance civil and human rights. The design intent of the center embodies symbolism from the skin to the structure itself. The skin, made of custom cut panels, are different colors to represent the different nationalities, while the structure is designed to be curved as if it were two hands holding the value of human life. Given the unique and iconic design of this structure, our team completed constructability and coordination reviews throughout the life of the project to ensure each specific detail was built to realize the full design intent.
